Cabo de Gata Full Traverse by Kayak
The most complete traverse of the Almería coastline. From Las Negras to the Cabo de Gata Lighthouse or vice versa, covering more than 40 km of pristine coastline, caves, volcanic cliffs and coves inaccessible by land.
There are experiences you tell and experiences you live. The Cabo de Gata full traverse belongs to the second category. It is the kind of adventure that changes the way you understand the sea, nature and your own limits.
For 2 or 3 days, the group of maximum 6 paddlers travels from north to south (or south to north) the complete coastline of Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, the largest marine and natural reserve on the Iberian Peninsula. More than 40 kilometres of coast with no roads, no hotels, no jet ski noise. Just the kayaks, crystal-clear water, volcanic cliffs and the absolute silence of the most authentic Mediterranean.
You camp on beaches that can only be reached by kayak. We cook together at sunset as the stars begin to appear over the park. At dawn, the sea receives the first rays of light before anywhere else in Almería. These are images and sensations that the camera captures but that the body and memory retain differently, more deeply and lastingly.
The complete Natural Park route
The traverse is divided into three geographical zones of the park, each with its own character and most special points. Here is a summary of what you will see at each stage.
Northern Zone – Las Negras to Cala de San Pedro
The traverse sets off from the volcanic beach of Las Negras, the last village before entering the wildest coastline of the park. In this first stretch, the Punta Negra cliffs mark the entrance to a shoreline that has remained practically unchanged for centuries. The sea caves of Punta Negra are the expedition's first stop: volcanic chimneys that the sea has perforated over millennia, creating dark passages and chambers lit by light filtering from above. The first camp is set up at Cala de San Pedro, the legendary beach with the medieval castle and freshwater spring, a place many paddlers consider the most beautiful in the Spanish Mediterranean.
Central Zone – Cala de San Pedro to Isleta del Moro
The second stretch is the most demanding of the traverse and also the most rewarding in terms of scenery. The coast between San Pedro and La Isleta del Moro is completely inaccessible by land: no trail, no road, no building. Only volcanic cliffs falling vertically to the sea, interrupted occasionally by tiny black-sand coves that do not even have official names. This area houses the most spectacular geological formations in the Natural Park: basalt arches, hexagonal columns, sea stacks rising 80 metres above sea level. It is the Zonaktiva guides' favourite stretch, the one that impacts expedition members the most.
Southern Zone – Isleta del Moro to Cabo de Gata Lighthouse
The final stretch leads to the symbolic heart of the Natural Park: the Arrecife de las Sirenas and the Cabo de Gata Lighthouse, the southernmost point and the most exposed to the open Mediterranean. As the expedition approaches the lighthouse, the coastline changes character: cliffs give way to fine-sand beaches and extensive posidonia oceanica meadows visible from the surface. The Arrecife de las Sirenas, a volcanic formation emerging from the sea in front of the lighthouse, is one of the most photographed and recognisable spots in Almería. Arriving there by kayak, after 40 km of expedition, is one of those moments you carry with you forever.
The exact direction of the route (north to south or south to north) is decided based on the weather forecast for the days of the traverse. We always choose the most favourable direction in terms of wind and swell to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the group.
Who is this expedition for?
The Cabo de Gata full traverse by kayak is a physically and technically demanding expedition. It is designed for experienced paddlers who have already completed long days in sea kayak and feel comfortable in open sea conditions. The nature of the activity, with exposed coastal stretches and camping in remote locations, requires a higher level of preparation and experience than standard excursions.
However, "experienced" does not mean "competitive". Many participants in the full traverse are simply people who have been kayaking regularly for years, who have good physical fitness and who are looking for a real adventure, not a tourist activity. If you have doubts about whether your level is suitable, contact us and we will assess it together with no obligation.
Required profile
- Prior sea kayak experience, including at least one outing of more than 5 hours

Season and conditions
The Cabo de Gata full traverse is carried out exclusively in low season: October to April. This decision has two fundamental reasons. First, weather conditions: in summer, the Levante wind blows strongly in the park, making some coastal stretches impossible for kayaking. In autumn and winter, the wind is more variable and allows better weather windows for the expedition.
Second, respect for the ecosystem: in July and August, the Natural Park bears very high tourist pressure, with thousands of people on the best-known beaches. The multi-day kayak traverse in Cabo de Gata aims to discover the wildest and most solitary coastline, something that is only possible when the park is quiet and remote beaches are practically deserted.
The water in autumn and winter maintains temperatures between 14°C and 20°C, perfectly suitable for the activity with a wetsuit. Autumn sunsets over the Mediterranean from a remote park beach are, according to expedition participants, one of the most beautiful spectacles they have ever seen.

We monitor the weather one week in advance. If the weather window is not suitable, we postpone the departure at no cost. Group safety is always prioritised over any schedule.
The most complete kayak traverse in the Spanish Mediterranean
The Cabo de Gata kayak traverse is considered by many paddlers as the benchmark for sea kayak expeditions in Spain. The unique combination of volcanic geology, exceptional marine biodiversity, absence of coastal infrastructure and exclusive access from the water makes this coastline one of the most valued kayak expedition destinations in all of Europe.
The multi-day Cabo de Gata kayak traverse has a special meaning that goes beyond sport. During the days on the water, the group develops a relationship with the marine environment completely different from that of a tourist. You learn to read the sea, respect its rhythms, understand why historical coastal populations depended on these waters. It is a form of travel that more and more people seek as an alternative to conventional holidays.
At Zonaktiva we organise the Cabo de Gata full traverse with very small groups (maximum 6 people) to guarantee an authentic, safe experience with minimal impact on the Natural Park ecosystem. We hold all necessary authorisations and have been covering this coastline for years with the utmost respect for its fragility.
